History

The Polish Song and Dance Company of Brisbane OBERTAS was formed in early 1982 for the initial purpose of performing in the Opening Ceremony of the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, but now OBERTAS has a reputation for folkloric songs and dances from a diverse range of Polish regions and historic contexts, and continues to be the premier showpiece of Polish folklore in south-east Queensland.

Under the artistic direction of its founder and choreographer, Henry (Michael) Kurylewski, the company has given numerous performances at local venues, as well as in capital cities around Australia and New Zealand, participating in television appearances, thirteen PolArt Festivals, seven Queensland Multi-cultural Festivals,two Shell Folkloric Concerts and World Expo ’88.

OBERTAS has hosted two highly successful PolArt Festivals in Brisbane (PolArt 88 and PolArt 2000) and is co-hosting PolArt 2018.
